Our Interventional Radiology Integrated Residency Training Program is a 5-year ACGME-accredited residency that begins after the completion of a 1-year ACGME-accredited clinical experience. This is followed by three years of diagnostic radiology training, culminating in two years of interventional radiology training within a clinically oriented teaching environment. Gregory Woodhead, MD, PhD, Program Director along with Jack Hannallah, MD, MPH, MBA, and Lucas Struycken, MD, Associate Program Directors, oversee this comprehensive, rigorous and engaging residency experience.
Recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties ABMS, American Board of Radiology ABR, and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education ACGME, the IR-Integrated Residency program offers expanded procedural and peri-procedural care beyond the traditional experiences of diagnostic radiology residency or interventional radiology fellowship.
The program includes essential clinical care rotations, outpatient clinic experiences, and inpatient consultations, providing a strong foundation for careers in both Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Radiology, leading to dual certification.
Program Progression
- PGY II through PGY IV
In the first three years residents rotate through all clinical subspecialties of radiology, including pediatrics, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, chest, musculoskeletal, interventional/angiography, neuroradiology, mammography, ultrasound, abdominal CT, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Residents are also required to complete research projects, and dedicated research time is available as an elective. Learn more about research opportunities.
- PGY V and PGY VI
During the fourth and fifth years, residents shift to a focused interventional radiology training experience. Training in interventional radiology involves a gradual increase in responsibility under the close supervision of faculty members. Residents receive evaluations after each rotation and feedback on their educational progress, including biannual conferences with the training director.
All residents participate in the annual American College of Radiology In-Training Examination. A board review program, a physics course, and small focus-study groups with faculty help prepare senior residents for success on the American Board of Radiology Examination.
