Jean-Philippe Galons, PhD

Associate Research Professor
MR Physicist, Clinical MRI

Jean-Philippe Galons, PhD, served as Research Associate Professor and MR Physicist in the University of Arizona Department of Medical Imaging.

After earning his PhD in Biochemistry-Biophysics at the Université d'Aix Marseille, Dr. Galons completed a postdoctoral fellowship in biophysics at the National Institute for Environmental Studies, Tsukuba, Japan. The following year, Dr. Galons completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Physical Chemistry at Tokyo University in Tokyo, Japan.

Dr. Galons’ journey with the University of Arizona began as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry. After leaving briefly to serve as assistant professor at the University Aix Marseille in France, Dr. Galons returned to the University of Arizona as a Research Associate Professor of Radiology, a role he dedicated himself to for the past 30 years.

Dr. Galons was a renowned expert in MRI technology and its applications in preclinical and translational research. As a key member of the Translational Bioimaging Resource, he played a crucial role in supporting the 7T Bruker small animal MRI scanner. His contributions extended to clinical MRI program, where he aided in advanced applications for clinical practice and research.

Throughout his career, Dr. Galons authored and co-authored more than seventy high-impact journal articles pertaining to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) and served as a peer reviewer for a number of esteemed societies and journals. He was Co-I on eight major NIH R01 Grants totaling over 15.2M, and served as Co-Investigator of several NIH/NCI-funded, Endowments, Arizona State and UArizona Cancer Center grants totaling nearly 5M. His crucial roles involved establishing MR protocols, study design and data analysis. Moreover, Dr. Galons’ research involving the characterization of disease and/or response to therapy is highly impactful. His work contributes to the understanding of disease and paves the way for improved therapeutic interventions with the potential to benefit countless patients.
