It is with great sadness to announce the unexpected passing of Jean- Philippe (JP) Galons, PhD, on July 13, 2024, in Tucson, Arizona.
Dr. Galons’ journey with the University of Arizona began as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry. After leaving briefly to serve as assistant professor at the University Aix Marseille in France, Dr. Galons returned to the University of Arizona as a Research Associate Professor of Radiology, a role he dedicated himself to for the past 30 years.
Dr. Galons was a renowned expert in MRI technology and its applications in preclinical and translational research. As a key member of the Translational Bioimaging Resource, he played a crucial role in supporting the 7T Bruker small animal MRI scanner. His contributions extended to our clinical MRI program, where he aided in advanced applications for clinical practice and research.
Dr. Galons is survived by his wife, Maria Altbach, and their two children. He will be remembered by his many colleagues and friends as a kind soul who brought joy and positivity into their lives. With a way of making everyone around him feel valued and appreciated, Dr. Galons – or JP as he is best known, is described as a brilliant scientist, a solution finder and an inspiring people-person. His dedication to family, research and his unwavering support of others leaves a lasting impact.
An event honoring and celebrating JP’s life will be held in September.
