Dr. Arif-Tiwari’s GI Cancer Research

Medical Imaging Vice Chair, Associate Professor and University of Arizona Cancer Center member Hina Arif-Tiwari, MD, is working on a research team aiming to better understand and combat an often silent killer: pancreatic cancer.  Arif's research is focused on the most common form of this disease, known as Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Commonly, patients receiving a PDAC diagnosis also receive a poor prognosis. Five year survival rates are reported to be only 7%.

Dr. Arif is part of the project, titled “Understanding the Tumor Microenvironment for the Early Detection and Treatment of GI Cancers.” The researchers applied for and were awarded a $250,000 the “Sparking Bench-to-Bedside Team Science Project” grant by the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

The collaborated efforts of this project will tackle early detection, resistance to targeted therapy and metastasis and disease recurrence.  Possessing a self-described “passion for science,” Dr. Arif is compelled to improve the health outcomes of patients dealing with this deadly disease.
