The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have Richard C. Semelka, MD, FRCPC, presenting at our Grand Rounds on Tuesday, September 18th, in the College of Medicine, Room 2117, at 7:00 am.

Dr. Richard Semelka has been one of the pioneers of the development of modern body MRI, that has become in wide use across the world. He is also an authority on safety in Radiology, having written definitive papers on medical radiation, informed consent, medicolegal interpretations for Radiology studies, overuse of CT, NSF, and most recently Gadolinium Deposition Disease. Dr. Semelka has written over 360 peer-reviewed papers and 18 Radiology text-books.  

Abstract: There has been recent fear and attention given to Gd retention in the body following GBCA administration. Additionally, a large number of patients have reported that they have become sick after receiving GBCA injection. In this presentation Dr Semelka will provide a formalized description of the disease, termed Gadolinium Deposition Disease (GDD), and methods to avoid and treat the disease. He will also emphasize an overview of risks in Radiology, and that there are other injuries that may be much worse than GDD, such as medical radiation from CT.
