Medical Imaging Grand Rounds - MRI of Liver Fibrosis

Wed, 09/18/2019 - 12:00pm

Title: MRI of Liver Fibrosis

Speaker: Jonathan Dillman, MD, MSc

The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have Jonathan R. Dillman, MD, MSc, presenting at our Grand Rounds on Wednesday, September 18th, in the College of Medicine, Room 2117 at 12:00 pm.

Dr. Dillman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is an Associate Chief (Research) and Medical Director of our Imaging Research Center. His clinical and research interests relate to imaging the pediatric abdomen, and in particular quantitative MRI and ultrasound imaging of the liver and bowel. Dr. Dillman trained in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Michigan, including residency and two fellowships (Pediatric Radiology and Abdominal Imaging). He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Dr. Dillman is currently Co-chair of the Society of Abdominal Radiology Crohn’s Disease, Disease Focus Panel, Chair of the Society of Pediatric Radiology Abdominal Committee, Board member of the Society of Pediatric Radiology, and a Member of the ACR Drugs and Contrast Committee. He has had numerous honors, including SPR’s Caffey Award and 2018 Abdominal Radiology (journal) Paper of the Year.

Abstract: Chronic liver diseases are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in both pediatric and adult populations. MRI is increasingly being used to noninvasively detect and follow these diseases. Novel quantitative MRI methods (e.g., MR elastography, T1 mapping) allow quantification of liver injury and liver fibrosis, thus offering more personalized disease assessment and potentially eliminating the need for invasive biopsy in some individuals. This lecture will review various MRI methods for detecting and measuring  liver fibrosis, including both state-of-the-art and emerging techniques. Such MRI techniques will be demonstrated in clinical practice as well as in the research environment.
