Geoffrey Rubin earns gold medal from radiology association

Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, chair and professor of medical imaging at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, was presented with the Association of Academic Radiology’s Gold Medal Award in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the association, academic radiology and the field of radiology.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized by my peers in the Association of Academic Radiology,” said Rubin, who has been a member of the association for 14 years and is serving as secretary on its board of directors.

The association has more than 1,300 members, consisting of academic radiologists, residents and fellows. According to its website, the purpose of the association is to “encourage excellence in radiological laboratory and clinical investigation, teaching and clinical practice, and to represent academic radiology at a national level.”

Rubin’s research uses artificial intelligence machine learning on large data sets with the goal of helping radiologists train their eyes to the most important areas of images.

“I thoroughly enjoy building programs that enhance the use of imaging in health care and scientific research,” said Rubin, who joined the college in 2020. “I relish the opportunity to develop the careers of our faculty, residents, fellows and medical students, while advancing the quality of care for our patients.”

In presenting the award to Rubin, Thomas Grist, MD, a professor and chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, said, “I have personally observed the impact that his insight and strategic thinking have had for the benefit of the AAR and other radiology societies he has served.

“Beyond his scientific and clinical contributions, Dr. Rubin has profoundly impacted the field through his mentorship and leadership training. His work embodies the spirit of innovation, leadership and dedication to academic radiology that this award seeks to recognize.”

Added Rubin: “It is a privilege to work with the many talented and passionate physicians, scientists, students and staff within the College of Medicine – Tucson and Banner Health communities. Dean Michael M.I. Abecassis, MD, MBA, has brought many outstanding leaders to the college from top university programs around the country. I am honored to work with such a diverse and accomplished group of leaders.”
