TUCSON, Ariz. – Effective July 1, 2025, the Department of Medical Imaging at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson will become the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. Approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, this change marks a significant milestone in the department’s continued growth and evolution.
The new name more fully captures the department’s comprehensive role in clinical care, research, and education, and highlights the essential role of imaging in shaping modern medicine. Following a departmental survey, faculty, residents, and fellows overwhelmingly supported the change, noting that the new name better represents the department’s mission and impact.
“Imaging today plays a central role in nearly every aspect of healthcare—from disease detection and diagnosis to treatment planning and long-term surveillance,” said Geoffrey Rubin, MD, MBA, FACR, Department Chair. “Our field has also become integral to advancing scientific discovery, supporting critical insights into human biology at molecular, cellular, organ, and system levels. This name change affirms our identity and the promise of what's to come.”
The transition reinforces the department’s commitment to collaboration across the university and beyond, as it continues to lead innovation in radiology and imaging sciences. With the new name, clinical faculty and researchers aim to deepen interdisciplinary connections and expand partnerships that further medical advancements.
“Our success depends on building a collaborative community that draws on the full breadth of imaging science expertise across our university,” Dr. Rubin added. “The ability to collaborate meaningfully and partner effectively will determine the impact we can make, and we are excited to embrace the possibilities of this future.”
