Computed Tomography

The Department of Medical Imaging employs radiation dose reduction strategies through the use of state-of-the-art CT technology. The new dual-source CT scanner that is uniquely available at the Banner University Medical Center allows for split second scanning of the heart and is able to image the entire chest-abdomen-pelvis in approximately 2 seconds. This latest generation hardware and software has directly impacted patients by allowing for an approximately 50-70% reduction in radiation dose for CT scans with this technology, providing a faster and more accurate diagnosis that is also safer. The dual-source technology also allows for direct tissue interrogation in ways that have not been previously possible, such as the ability to diagnose the chemical make-up of renal stones and to separate high-density materials such as iodinated contrast and bone.
