Title: Quantitative MRI Technology: Opportunities for New Clinical Applications

Speaker: Maria Altbach, PhD

The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have Maria Altbach, PhD, presenting at our Grand Rounds on Wednesday, May 1st, in the College of Medicine, Room 3117, at 12:00 pm.

Dr. Altbach is Professor and Vice-Chair of Research in the Department of Medical Imaging and Professor of Biomedical Engineering.

Dr. Altbach's research group focuses on the development of novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for biomedical applications. Her group works in close collaboration with clinicians to develop better and more efficient techniques aimed at improving the diagnosis of disease and the personalized treatment of patients. One of the major goals is to be able to derive non-invasive quantitative biomarkers of disease from data acquired within the time constraints of a clinical MRI examination. The idea is to complement the current qualitative-approach of clinical radiology with a quantitative or "parametric" approach. This should improve the accuracy in diagnosis while keeping an efficient clinical workflow, allow for precise and objective monitoring of treatment, and provide unique tools for studies aimed at understanding the pathophysiology of disease.

Abstract:  The seminar will focus on MRI technical developments for quantitative mapping with an emphasis on novel clinical applications. Over the years, our group has pioneered technologies for fast and robust quantitative MRI.  In collaboration with industry, these technologies are being translated to the clinic offering new opportunities for emerging clinical applications. The lecture will cover applications for body, MSK, brain, prostate, cardiac, and vessel wall imaging.
