Title: Lung Cancer Imaging Evaluation in the Era of Targeted Therapies

The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have Diana Palacio, MD, presenting at our Grand Rounds on Wednesday, June 19th, in the College of Medicine, Room 2117, at 12:00 pm.

Dr. Palacio is currently an Associate Professor at The University of Arizona-Banner Medical Center.  She attended medical school at The University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia and subsequently earned a position in the radiology residency program at the same institution.  Later, she completed a fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, and a Thoracic Imaging Fellowship in the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. She has been practicing academic medicine for over a decade. Her areas of interest include current and potential future applications for Imaging of Cardiothoracic Diseases, with emphasis on oncology. She is passionate about excellence in patient care, resident and fellows' education, networking, and promoting the interaction between radiologists and the rest of the clinical medical specialties.

Abstract: Recent discoveries regarding genomics of lung cancer have led to the development of effective targeted therapies. The response assessment for research purposes and clinical practice is mainly performed with imaging. Therefore, radiologists should understand the scientific basis for these treatments, including the main genomic alterations in malignant cells and how their modification reflects on the post-therapy imaging appearance and potential associated complications. This would result in a more effective communication with the clinical oncologists, and, ultimately better patient care.
