The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have T. Gail Pritchard, PhD, presenting at our Grand Rounds on Wednesday, December 13th, at 12:00 pm in the College of Medicine, Room 2117.
T. Gail Pritchard, PhD, came to The University of Arizona, College of Medicine, in 2012 as a learning specialist in Graduate Medical Education and Curricular Affairs. Now the Director of Resident and Fellow Development and an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics, she works with individual residents, fellows, and programs in supporting communication and interpersonal skills, professionalism, study and test-taking, time management, and organization. She serves on the CoM Professionalism Program, the Professional Support Team, the Student Progress Committee, and the Continuing Medical Education Committee. She has been instrumental in the launching of the CoM’s new initiative, Cup of Coffee Conversations for Promoting Professionalism.
Abstract: Two of the most difficult tasks in teaching and learning are providing effective feedback and being receptive to feedback, whether the teacher or the learner. The goal of feedback is “narrowing the gap between actual and desired performance” (Cantillon & Sargeant, 2008). However, even understanding the purpose does not make giving or receiving feedback easier tasks. Rather, those giving feedback may be reluctant because they know they are likely to experience “push-back,” while those receiving feedback may have negative associations with who delivers the feedback as well as where, when, and how it is delivered. The purpose of this session is to help both givers and receivers of feedback to develop meta-awareness about both processes and to take away strategies for effectively communicating expectations regarding teaching and learning.
