Medical Imaging Grand Rounds - Transcatheter Embolization: A Case Based Discussion

Mon, 07/30/2018 - 12:00pm

Speaker:  Benjamin Pomerantz, MD

Title:  Transcatheter Embolization: A case based discussion

The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have Benjamin Pomerantz, MD, presenting at our Grand Rounds on Monday, July 30th, in the College of Medicine, Room 2117, at 12:00 pm.

Dr. Pomerantz is an Interventional Radiologist currently residing in Kalispell, Montana. He received his undergraduate degree from Colorado College and is a graduate of Dartmouth Medical School. He began his training at the University of Colorado as a resident in Surgery. During this time, Dr. Pomerantz persued his research interest in cytokine signaling associated with ischemic heart disease, focusing on the role of TNF-α and IL-18. After conducting basic science research for 6 years, he returned to clinical medicine completing his radiology residency and Interventional Radiology fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Pomerantz remained at MGH as an attending physician in Interventional Radiology and a faculty Member of Harvard Medical School.

In 2011, Dr. Pomerantz moved to Kalispell where he has been practicing Interventional Radiology. His clinical interests include: Interventional Oncology (radioembolization, chemoembolization and percutaneous ablation) vascular disease (PAD, mesenteric ischemia and renal artery stenosis), embolotherapy (uterine artery, prostatic artery and gonadal veins), transradial intervention, treatment of portal hypertension (TIPS, PARTO and BARTO), and complex hepatobiliary and GU interventions. He has authored and coauthored over 30 journal articles and book chapters and is a frequent moderator of case conferences and the interdisciplinary tumor board.

Abstract:  Over the past three decades, there has been a paradigm shift in the treatment of vascular related diseases with the introduction and rapid evolution of endovascular techniques. Catheter directed delivery of embolic material is becoming increasingly common for the treatment of multiple conditions. Embolization for acute hemorrhage as well as for the treatment of both benign and malignant disease processes is now commonplace. Numerous embolic agents including particles, mechanical occlusive devices, sclerosants and liquids are available to Interventional Radiologists. Embolic agents have their strengths and weakness making them suitable for various clinical situations. Knowledge of the agents and their proper usage in the IR armamentarium is critical in order to perform safe and effective catheter directed embolization. Inappropriate selection of an embolic can lead to catastrophic complications resulting in significant patient morbidity and mortality. Clinically available agents will be reviewed with cases used to highlight the selection, management and use of embolic materials. Additionally, future direction of embolic agents will be discussed.
