To perform a nuclear medicine exam, a specific radiopharmaceutical is administered intravenously or swallowed. The radiopharmaceutical is then localized in the body with a special camera that detects the radiation released by the radiopharmaceutical. The amount of time between administration of the radiopharmaceutical and the scan varies depending on the type of exam being performed. The gamma camera or PET/CT, which acquires the exam images, requires the patient to remain still during the exam and generally takes 20 to 45 minutes to complete. The exams are safe and very rarely have any side effects.
